Steve Lillywhite CBE is a six-time Grammy Award Winning Record Producer. He has been credited on over five hundred records and holds an impressive resumé collaborating with a variety of musicians including U2, The Rolling Stones, The Pogues, Simple Minds, Morrissey and The Killers. Lillywhite is one of the most acclaimed and successful producers in British pop music history.

He has been credited on over five hundred records and holds an impressive resumé collaborating with a variety of musicians including U2, The Rolling Stones, The Pogues, Simple Minds, Morrissey and The Killers. Lillywhite is one of the most acclaimed and successful producers in British pop music history. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 2012 for his contributions to music.
Lillywhite entered the music industry in 1972, when he worked as a tape operator for Polygram. He produced a demo recording for Ultravox, which led to them being offered a recording contract with Island Records. Soon after, he joined Island as a staff producer, where he worked with many New Wave acts including Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Psychedelic Furs and Eddie
and the Hot Rods.

1980 saw Lillywhite firmly establish his presence on the music scene when he produced the Psychedelic Fur’s self-titled debut album. He also produced Peter Gabriel’s critically acclaimed third solo album, Pete Gabriel. This album established Gabriel as one of rock’s most ambitious, innovative musicians and in turn considerably raised Lillywhite’s profile. That same year, he produced Boy, the debut effort from a then unknown U2. From that album, he remained U2’s producer of choice, collaborating with them on the albums October and their 1983 breakthrough War. In 1986, Lillywhite undertook the spectacular project of producing The Rolling Stone’s Dirty Work.
In 1987, he worked with The Pogues, producing the magical ‘Fairytale of New York’ which still tops the charts and playlists around the world each Christmas. Throughout the 90s, Lillywhite’s success continued, working with acts like Dave Matthew’s Band, Morrissey and Travis as well as co-producing songs from U2’s Achtung Baby working alongside Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Flood.
In 2002 Universal Music Group invited him to take on the role of Managing Director. While at Universal, Lillywhite enjoyed great success including signing Razorlight and producing Jason Mraz’s Mr A-Z.

In September 2005, Lillywhite joined Columbia Records as a Senior Vice-President of A&R where during his tenure he signed MGMT. 2006 saw him collect Grammy Awards for Record of the Year with U2’s Beautiful Day and Walk On. He was also awarded with Producer of the Year (non-classical), Best Rock Album, also with U2’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and a shared win for Album of the Year, also for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.
In 2008, he resumed working with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois on U2’s No Line on the Horizon and he produced a number of recordings for the World Café radio show on NPR. In 2009, he began presenting his own weekly radio show on East Village Radio in New York City called The Lillywhite Sessions.

In 2015, he was awarded his sixth Grammy award at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for his work on Juanes album Loco De Amor. He also worked extensively with The Killers on their fourth studio album Battle Born which reached the top ten in twenty countries and became the band’s fourth consecutive number one studio album in the United Kingdom.
Steve has been travelling the world for speaking engagements and shares some of the stories and insights from his incredible career and achievements to date. He returned to Dublin’s legendary recording studio, Windmill Lane where he spoke to a corporate audience in conversation with RTÉ’s Dave Fanning discussing creativity, collaboration and thinking outside the box. |
