Gary is an Award-Winning Chef, Broadcaster and Columnist. Gary is the Executive Chef at the Chateau du Coudreceau in France and he was previously the Head Chef at Viewmount House since it opened in August 2008.
Originally from Ramelton, near Letterkenny, Gary has previously worked at The Olde Post restaurant at Cloverhill, and at the Lobster Pot Restaurant in the Galway Bay Hotel. Prior to returning to Ireland, Gary was head chef at Devlin’s Restaurant and Bar in Boston. In 2019, Gary appeared twice on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen where dishes he cooked included a delicious Chicken Mornay with Chorizo Crumb. Most recently, Gary worked with Lidl on their RARE event. Gary was challenged to create a mouth-watering menu which showcased the very best of Lidl’s Bord Bia Quality Assured Irish beef. Gary guided guests in the 'experience room' where they enjoyed each of his dishes in the dark. All proceeds for the event were donated to Lidl’s Charity Partner, Jigsaw the National Centre for Youth Mental Health in Ireland.
When Gary was Head Chef at Viewmount House, his repertoire of modern classic dishes fused from his knowledge of traditional Irish cooking along with the skills he honed in Boston resulted in the restaurant being ever present in the McKenna Guides Top 100 Places to Stay & Eat since 2009. The icing on the cake came in 2014 when Viewmount House was named "Best Restaurant in Ireland" by Georgina Campbell.
Gary has been ever present on our screens since 2009 with regular appearances on RTÉ and Virgin Media. On RTÉ he is regularly on The Today Show with Daithí and Maura and previously Four Live.
On Virgin Media One, he often joins Martin and Muireann on The Six O’Clock Show and previously Late Lunch Live. Gary is the chef in charge of Starters on the hugely popular Virgin Media One series The Restaurant. He also featured in a number of other popular series including Head Chef and MasterChef. In 2017, Gary O’Hanlon took part in RTÉ’s Celebrity Operation Transformation. Gary was hugely successful on the show having lost the most amount of weight and changing his lifestyle habits completely for the better. On radio, Gary contributed to Lunchtime Live every Wednesday on Newstalk.
Gary wrote a weekly recipe column for The Irish Times Magazine every Saturday, offering readers interesting ways to use Irish artisanal produce. He also wrote a book called Food for the Soul in aid of Active Retirement Ireland. The book, which is a collection of Gary’s favourite home-cooked recipes, won the 'Gourmand World Book Award for Best in Ireland’.
A proud member of Eurotoques Ireland and an Ambassador of Food for his native Donegal, Gary strives to find the best producers of Irish Artisanal Food and to showcase them in the kitchens of Viewmount House.
Additionally, Gary regularly participates in culinary events around the country including Taste of Dublin, Electric Picnic and many more.
