Dr Nina Byrnes first appeared on our screens as co-presenter of the popular RTÉ series Health of the Nation. Since then, she has become a familiar face in Irish media and is a well-known and respected Media Medical Expert. Nina joins Lunchtime Live each Monday for their “Ask the GP” segment, tackling listeners medical queries.
She was part of the team for Doctor in the House on Virgin Media One. In the show she used her expertise to identify key and potential health risks, and ensured that each household woke up to the health challenges they were facing. Previously, she acted as Expert Medical Contributor to the RTÉ’s afternoon show 4 Live.
Nina wrote a weekly column for the Irish Independent. She also was invited to be a Health Blogger for the Huffington Post UK Edition.
She was a regular contributor to radio including RTÉ 2FM where she was the resident Medical Expert on the Tubridy Show and has contributed to Today FM, Newstalk, 98FM, and 4FM.
In 2011, Your Health Matters, was commissioned by Blackwater Press. The book is a top-to-toe guide. You will learn how the different systems in your body function, as well as finding clear, simple information about the risks, symptoms, and treatment of some of the most common medical conditions.
Nina graduated third in her class with an Honours Medical Degree from Trinity College Dublin in 1996. She undertook postgraduate training in hospital medicine in Ireland, the USA and Australia including time in the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Ohio before becoming a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners. In addition to her GP qualifications Nina obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry as she strongly believes that a person’s mental health has a profound influence on their physical wellbeing. Nina owns and is a practising GP at Generation Health Medical Clinic in Dublin.
Nina’s work encompasses all areas of general family practice but her special interests are cardiovascular and preventive health, women’s health, lifestyle medicine, ADHD and Mental Health. She is known for her ability to break down medical jargon and her empathetic straight-talking approach.
Nina has been invited to speak on health-related topics to both health professionals and the public. She has offered master classes at media road shows such as Woman’s Way Live, and provided video and medical content for a number of Consumer Medical Websites. Nina has worked with a number of major national and international brands including Avonmore, Bayer Healthcare, GSK, Hidden Hearing and medical related companies and societies to increase awareness of health and lifestyle related issues in the community.
Having had many excellent mentors throughout her career Nina is committed to the next generation of doctors. She is involved in teaching Trinity Medical Students.
Nina was born in Ireland but spent part of her childhood living in France and the USA. She is now settled in Dublin where she lives with her husband and children.
