Dr David Coleman is a practicing Clinical Psychologist and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Psychology in UCD. He also presents television programmes and David writes a feature column in the Irish Independent, every Wednesday, providing expert commentary on children, teenagers, and family life. He is also the regular expert, contributor on ‘Today With Claire Byrne’, on RTÉ Radio 1, on parenting and child and adolescent wellbeing and development. He has authored three books so far.
David has become best known in Ireland as the presenter of the hit RTÉ television series Families in Trouble, 21st Century Child, Teens in the Wild and Families in the Wild and Bullyproof. David’s series Bullyproof was broadcasted on RTÉ. In this series, David offered his expertise and therapeutic skills to a number of teenagers and their families who have been affected by bullying. He wanted to help them overcome the trauma that the bullying experiences have caused and encourage them to look toward their futures in a more positive frame of mind. The series won an IFTA (Irish Film and Television Award) for Best Documentary Series in February 2013. All his television programmes have dealt with aspects of family life, parenting and child and adolescent development. A natural communicator, David’s style is universally acclaimed as accessible and approachable.
David gives lectures and workshops to groups all around the country on topics ranging from parenting to communication. Speaking in person to thousands over the last few years, David enjoys the engagement with a live audience and his entertaining style is always acknowledged.
Not content with his media and lecturing work David is also a bestselling author of Parenting is Child’s Play a guide to raising young children. His second book, published in January 2010, is a guide for parents of teenagers called Parenting is Child’s Play: The Teenage Years. David’s third book The Thriving Family is a guide to having a happy and harmonious family life, across all ages and stages of family.
During his radio career, David was part of the Tubridy Show on 2FM and has also contributed to a number of other national shows including the Marian Finucane Show on RTÉ Radio 1 and Sean Moncrieff on Newstalk.
In the midst of all his media work David still practices as a Clinical Psychologist and unsurprisingly specialises in working with children, teenagers and their families.
David is also and ambassador for the ISPCC.
