Nina Byrnes: Doctor, Presenter, Writer
Nina Byrnes first appeared on our screens in 2010 as co presenter on the popular TV series “Health of the Nation”. She is also a practising GP and partner in Oakwood Medical Clinic in Castleknock Dublin. Nina spent several years of her childhood and adolescence living in France and the USA but
returned home to sit exams and to attend college. Nina graduated with an Honours Medical Degree from Trinity College Dublin in 1996. She undertook postgraduate training in Ireland, the USA and in Australia.
Having worked in a large range of medical specialties Nina realised that her real interest lay in Primary Care and Preventive Medicine. She obtained her Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners in 2004 and is enrolled on the Specialist Register of the Irish Medical Council. In addition to her GP qualifications Nina undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry as she believes strongly that a person’s mental health has a profound influence on their overall physical wellbeing. Nina’s clinical work encompasses all areas of general family practice but her special interests are cardiovascular and preventive health, women’s health and lifestyle medicine.
It is this expertise that led to her role as a presenter on “Health of the Nation”. Her ability to break down medical jargon and her straight talking approach to patients has made her a popular presenter on the show. In addition to working full time as a GP and appearing on our TV screens, Nina has contributed to radio shows on RTE, Today FM, 98FM and a number of regional radio stations. She writes a weekly column “Medical Matters” in the Agenda magazine of the Sunday Business Post. She has recently been commissioned to write a medical book by Blackwater press and this is due for publication in 2011.
Nina has provided medical and media services for pharmaceutical giant Bayer and Hidden Hearing. Having had many excellent mentors through her career Nina is committed to the next generation of doctors. She is involved in teaching undergraduate Trinity medical students and has been appointed as a trainer on the Trinity Graduate Training scheme in General Practice. Nina is married and lives in Dublin with her husband and two children.
